Okay, let's move on to the next seen when Nancy goes home only to find Ryan hiding out there! He tells her it didn't work haha. Anyway, this episode is the best one since episode 3, in my opinion! Since episode 3, the other episodes haven't peaked my interest as much or left me excited for the next episode. But this episode finally did that again!! I really enjoyed this one, and I'm super excited for the next episode!
I'm going to try to go more in order for this episode, I'm afraid that my past reviews might confuse people because they're all over the place!!! haha. I also will try to go a little more into detail about the episode, since I know many of you read these as a refresher before the next episode!
Let's start off with the beginning, when Nancy is looking at the poem that she found in the time capsule that Lucy wrote (I completely forgot about this poem from the last episode). I love that Lucy kind of put clues in the poem and then left it for whoever opened the time capsule down the line to find. It makes me wonder if she suspected that something was going to happen to her...and wanted to make sure that if something did, that someone might be able to figure it out...but that might be stretching it a bit, I don't know. At first Nancy doesn't understand why there's all these references to mythology in the poem, and I don't think she really thinks much of it, not until she goes to Ryan's house and finds the first clue. I love that Lucy drew the same thing on her poem that is on the invitations to this mysterious underground party! And of course Nancy finds that invitation in Ryan's house. This is where we see the first nod to the books in the episode! the Velvet Masque is clearly a nod to book #30, "The Clue of the Velvet Mask"! So apparently the party that Karen said Lucy went to before she died, and started to act different, was actually an underground auction! And of course
Okay, let's move on to the next seen when Nancy goes home only to find Ryan hiding out there! He tells her that someone is trying to kill him because he owes someone money, and is in major debt. He tells her that in order to get the money he needs to pay these scary people back, he needs to sell old Roman burial coins that he got as a wedding gift, but unfortunately they’re locked up in his family’s private storage facility and he doesn't know how to get them. So of course, Nancy offers to break in and get the coins, but only one one condition. Ryan has to take her to the Velvet Masque.
Something I didn't like about this episode is how the rest of the gang basically "ganged" up (lol) on her, and kind of made her out to be the bad guy in the group. Not sure why George got mad at Nancy just because she's being haunted by Lucy. Nancy and the rest of the gang want the same thing, the coins, but in their mind, she was kind of pushing them away with the way she was doing things...I can see their point, but they should know by now that Nancy is pretty independent...I don't know. So Nancy of course gets the coins to give them to Ryan so that he can sell them at the auction, since he brought her to the weird underground auction in exchange, and the rest of the gang wants the coins because they found out that they're proof that his family is responsible for the death of 12 crew members...interesting I actually did enjoy that the group was split into 2 and going on the same mission, it just felt more exciting to me because you had to see who was going to accomplish the mission first. I also really liked that Nancy and George bonded!! I like seeing him bond with Nancy's friends! And we finally get to see Bess and George start to bond!
Ryan is still getting haunted by Lucy, and this time she get's physical, and Nancy witnesses it, and finally realizes that there must be more of a connection between Ryan and Lucy than Ryan is telling her, since she wouldn't be haunting him for no reason. He finally admits to Nancy that he and Lucy briefly dated, they had a summer fling, and he actually took her to the underground auction during their fling. Ryan is being very difficult when it comes to telling Nancy what he knows about Lucy and what their connection truly is, but that doesn't keep Nancy from trying!
I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole Bess and Lisbeth thing, first of all, it's just so out of character for Bess, she's always been SO boy crazy, but I also just can't get over the fact that they have the same name LOL. And then Lisbeth shows up at the auction because she's working at it. I honestly don't really feel like going much into this story line, because I'm not really interested in it and I don't think it's going anywhere interesting.
Looks like one of the crew members who died was one of Owen's uncle, and he wants the coins because they're proof that Ryan's family double crossed his family. Owen's aunt always suspected foul play since her husband and Mr. Hudson were rivals.
There's something very off with Ryan's mother, she seem super shady. We hear about why she wasn't at Tiffany's funeral...making up silly excuses, and then just starts talking about the coins, telling him that he can't sell them off because they belong in the family....strange.
Nancy stumbles across all the mythical characters from Lucy's poem, and starts to figure out the connection between her poem and what happened the night Lucy was at the auction. She starts to kind of see what happened, and I'm kind of confused about this...but I guess it's Lucy's ghost showing it to her?? I'm not really sure. So anyway, apparently Lucy caught Mrs. Hudson having an affair with her husband's rival (Owen's Uncle), and then she sees Lucy and kind of threatens her. And then of course in real life, Mrs. Hudson catches Nancy in whatever room she is in. She tells her that she shouldn't have been in that room, or at that party in general. Nancy starts to ask her about Lucy and the night Lucy came to the auction/party, and Mrs. Hudson pretends that she has no idea what she's talking about. But then of course Nancy gets a little more bold and flat out mentions how Lucy caught her having the affair. And then Mrs. Hudson basically threatens to kill Nancy if she says anything to anyone about the affair, and says, "But I bet you can be discreet...just like your father", which of course throws Nancy for a loop.
George screams as a diversion, and then the power goes out (Ace shuts it off briefly), Bess then kisses Lisbeth, and then rushes to steal the coins....and then the lights go back on (Ace didn't turn them on) and then she gets caught because that was super stupid to take the time to kiss someone when you had to rush to steal something. Ugh. Then Owen tells the men who grabbed Bess to let them all go and act like they never saw anything, and to not say a word about it. That was kind of strange.
Now Ryan goes into that room where Nancy was before, and sees the ghost of Lucy...but young Lucy..not creepy Lucy. He definitely didnt tell Nancy all there was about him and Lucy. He seems to have been actually in love with her. And then he kisses Lucy's ghost, and Nancy walks in and sees him kissing Lucy...but creepy Lucy. Nancy call's out "Ryan" and he pulls out of the kiss in a start to look at Nancy, and then sees that creepy Lucy is the one he was kissing, and Lucy grabs him, and we again see his ring turn red hot. Nancy notices and warns him. She sees "Lucy ---> Tiffany" engraved inside the ring. And Nancy is like, "Lucy was trying to tell me that her death lead to Tiffany's" That what I've been saying all along Nancy! And you had to have a GHOST tell you that? Step up your game! Love you and know you're a little rusty with the whole mystery solving thing, but come on! LOL. Nancy calls out Ryan for lying this whole time...about everything. And he finally admits it. He was away at boarding school when Lucy was murdered, and after she died his dad told her that he could never talk about her again. And Nancy actually believes him. He said that he really liked Lucy and was trying to impress her by bringing her to the auction, but that was a big mistake because something bad happened that night. He said he tried to get her to tell him what it was, but she wouldn't. His parents were super fishy about anything with Lucy, and simply told him that they handled it. Sketchy. Clearly the "bad thing" that happened was that Lucy caught Mrs. Hudson having an affair, what's weird is that Mr. Hudson seems to have known about it...
The scientist who Nancy sent Tiffany's blood to, finally gets back to her. And he says that Tiffany's DNA sample is going to take a little bit more time to inspect, but he found out that Lucy's crown had two separate DNAs on it, Lucys and another person...a female. And of course Nancy now suspects Mrs. Hudson.
Nancy shows up to The Claw where the rest of the gang is after leaving the auction, and she show them that she has the coins, because she switched them out with fakes (just regular money..LOL) when no one was looking. And for some reason George is angry and says, "it took us getting caught for you to help us?", not really sure why they're all so upset with Nancy.
Nancy and Ned then have a weird moment, and Ned seems pretty upset with Nancy..again..don't really understand, other than him being jealous of Owen. I really loved Nancy and Ned's dynamic in the beginning of the episode. It's so obvious he really cares about her and that he's scared that someone (Owen) is going to take her away from him. While Owen truly seems to care about Nancy, and frankly, is better looking than Ned..I don't want anyone with Nancy other than Ned (and Frank Hardy in the 70s series and some of the books, but that's the only exception! haha). Owen shows up to The Claw, and tells Nancy that even though he won the auction for the coins, he realized after he paid that they were just regular coins, and that the real ones were missing. He obviously knows its her but for some reason isn't mad? He just trusts Nancy to bring the Hudsons to justice. Ned watches them out the window and assumes that it's romantic, in his defense...that is what it looks like from a distance. In the middle of all this, Lisbeth shows up and talks to Bess, but I really wasn't interested in this so I don't really remember what happened other the fact that Bess kept saying to her how she keeps so many secrets and doesn't know how she can trust her...but um WHAT. Bess is the one with all the secrets! Ugh. Anyway, I was gettin nervous for a little bit that Nancy was going to choose Owen over Ned, but thankfully in the end, when he asks her to go to dinner with him, she tells him that she isn't available and that her heart belongs to Ned! And he's very respectful about it! Meanwhile Ned is inside looking devastated, ugghhh. Definitely more than just a hook-up now, she's finally letting him in...took her long enough! And then we see the coins moving on their own...are the cursed?!?! And that's the end of the episode.
So the only nods to the books in this episode that I noticed was the Velvet Mask think that I noticed earlier, and the name of the place that the auction is at is called the Blackwood Lodge, which is a nod to book #25, "The Ghost of Blackwood Hall"!!
The next episode (tonight's episode if you're reading this the day I post it) is entitled, "The Tale of the Fallen Sea Queen"! Sounds like we're going to get more information and back story on Lucy Sable, and I'm excited!!!
What did you guys think of this episode? I know I sounded kind of annoyed in this review, even though I said that it was my favorite one since the 3rd episode, but I really did enjoy it!!
Let me know what you thought about this episode!! Should I continue doing more detailed reviews like this one, or do you prefer how I've been doing them?
