Season 1, Episode 5, "The Case of the Wayward Spirit" Opinions/Review

This episode was....interesting. It was a decent episode and over all I enjoyed it, I just wasn't a fan of George being possessed. That part just didn't feel like Nancy Drew, it's not something that would have ever happened in the books. I'm fine with the ghost stuff because that did happen in the book sometimes, but possession is definitely not something we've seen in the books, so I wasn't super happy about that. If it wasn't Nancy Drew, I probably would have enjoyed that aspect because I found it very interesting to see Tiffany interact in the world after dying, you could feel the emotion and pain that she felt, and the confusion of no longer being there. But, I could have done without it, haha. Obviously Nancy full on believes in ghosts now, which is fine, but definitely interesting to see since we're not accustomed to seeing that from her very often! We find out that before she died, Tiffany had gotten information on the Hudsons that may or may not have been what got her murdered...interesting. When George was possessed by Tiffany, she kept saying to Ryan, "I know", and at first I thought that she meant she knew about his affair with George....but I think there's a lot more to it. It must be about the information that she discovered about the Hudsons. I also found it cool that we finally got to see some of George's family and learn more about her, we didn't get much of that at all in the books, and while it is different from the little bit of information we have gotten from them, it was still nice to learn more about her! I also enjoyed seeing Ned interact with Tiffany's ghost during the exorcism, she had a real trust in him and it was cool to see him really care about someone, and because of that, he was able to help her ghost move on. Before she left George's body though, she asks Ned to keep her sister Laura safe, and also says the word, "Dantés", which is clearly a clue to her murder.

Speaking of Ned caring about someone....he clearly gets jealous of this new guy, Owen Marvin. Owen is obviously interested in Nancy, and she seems to be somewhat interested in him as well...and Ned isn't liking that. Some people had a problem with Ned being the jealous type, but he didn't show his jealousy in a bad way, it was more so in a sad/worried way, because it's very clear that he truly cares about Nancy and wants to be with her. It was really nice seeing them more like a couple in this episode, casually kissing each other around others and whatnot, definitely not just a hook-up anymore (yay!). I'm also not totally convinced that Nancy is actually interested in Owen, I'm pretty sure she simply noticed that he was flirty with her, and decided to take advantage of that and get his help to uncover the time capsule. In the time capsule, Nancy finds a DVD, and on that DVD is some random footage from the high school at the time that Lucy went there. Nancy notices Lucy in a clip, and then Lucy's ghosts messes with the video in and makes the video skip in a way that the audio sounds like it's saying, "Ryan". I noticed that the guy in the video looked like he was supposed to be Ryan right away, but it took Lucy basically showing her for Nancy to finally notice that it was him haha. And now it seems even more so like the murder of Tiffany and the murder of Lucy are somehow related, just like I've been saying all along.

Nancy finally gets Karen to admit that she actually did know Lucy in high school...and that they were best friends. Karen says that she lied about knowing Lucy because she felt guilty. A year before Lucy died, the two of them had a falling out after a party that Lucy went to. I'm assuming something happened at this party that has some sort of significance as to why she was murdered.

We overhear Owen and Ryan talking at one point, and Ryan apparently lost hundreds of millions of dollars, but tells Owen that he's currently working on making all of that money back......interesting.

Now lets just talk really quick about the flash drive. Ned confronts Laura about her breaking into his stuff, and this is where we learn that Tiffany had information on the Hudsons, because she had told Laura. And Laura tells Ned and Ace that Tiffany had enough information to tear the Hudsons down. Towards the end of the episode, Ned finally is able to convince Laura to give him and Ace the flash drive, and that she shouldn't see what's on it, because Ned promised Tiffany that he would protect her. Ace and Ned put the flash drive in the laptop and try to figure out the password, and decide to try the last word Tiffany said before she left George's body, "Dantés". It worked! They see that Tiffany had a lot of dirt on, not only the Hudsons', but also on Owen. So it looks like he is the new suspect for Tiffany's murder!

This episode didn't have a lot of nods to the books, but their definitely were some!! My favorite one was the van that possessed George got her dress from, the van belonged to River Heights Dry Cleaning!! There was also a mention of Pine Hill when Ned and Ace were looking at the contents of the flash drive!

I'm sorry I got this review up so late, life has been busy!! But I'm super excited for tonight's episode, I'll be watching tomorrow! The next episode is entitled, "The Mystery of Blackwood Lodge", which is already a nod to the books!! I can't wait to see what is uncovered next! What did you guys think of this episode? Let me know!
