The very first book I ever read was a Nancy Drew Mystery Story by Carolyn Keene (although I don't remember which one). I have a very bad memory and actually don't remember most of my childhood, but I clearly remember my mom handing me my very first Nancy Drew book. At first I was skeptical, I really didn't want to read it. But, I eventually gave in, and I was immediately hooked. From then on, all throughout elementary school, I had stacks of Nancy Drew books on my desk at all times, and I read through them as fast as lightening. I couldn't get enough of Nancy Drew. I've read all 56 books in the original series, as well as hundreds of books from various other Nancy Drew series, such as The Nancy Drew Files, Nancy Drew Girl Detective, Nancy Drew Graphic Novels, etc. My mom soon introduced me to the 1970's TV show: The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. This starred Pamela Sue Martin as Nancy Drew (by far the best Nancy Drew we've had on screen so far), Parker Stevenson as Frank Hardy, and Shaun Cassidy as Joe Hardy. This sparked my love for Shaun Cassidy and his music. Over time, my mom got me the whole series (which unfortunately only consisted of 2 seasons of Nancy Drew and 3 seasons of The Hardy Boys). I loved this show so much, I watched it over and over again, and I still watch it quite often. Then I got my hands on the 90s Canadian Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys TV shows. These shows were based on The Nancy Drew Files and The Hardy Boys Case Files . The characters of Nancy and the boys were a little different than what we're used to, but over all they were good! I think the actress, Tracey Ryan, did a great job at playing Nancy, she just didn't look like her! haha. And the portrayals of Bess and George were basically perfect, definitely the best depictions of the cousins that we've seen on screen so far! Unfortunately, the shows only last 1 season each and the episodes were only about 20 minutes long. The episodes only being 20 minutes long really hindered the development of the plots, if they were an hour long the mysteries would have been much better, and I feel like the shows may have lasted longer than one season. My mom soon introduced me to the black and white Nancy Drew movies from the late 30s. These were cute and entertaining, but they made Nancy seem very ditsy and kind of rude, and they changed her boyfriend's name from Ned to Ted (because they thought the name Ned was too old fashioned, haha!), along with many other differences, so they weren't my favorite.
Eventually my mom found out about a whole series of Nancy Drew PC games from the company Her Interactive. I don't remember if this happened before or after she introduced me to the TV shows, but my mom began to get me all of these games. Eventually we were caught up with the release dates, so she'd get me a game every time a new one was released, many times preordering them. I have played and beat every single one of these games, and there are currently 33 of them. These games are so much fun, you get to be Nancy Drew and solve the case! They may sound childish, but they really are good for any age (they can be very difficult and sometimes even scary!!).
Nancy Drew is truly timeless. I have been collecting all things Nancy Drew since my mom gave me my first book, almost 20 years ago. She helped me start by researching herself the basics of collecting, and eventually I started to research myself, and I learned so much that I decided to put all that knowledge to use and create an Instagram account devoted to giving fellow Nancy Drew fans and collectors information on our favorite teen sleuth, information on how to collect, information on different editions, and lots more! As of writing this post, I have about 660 followers (now almost 1800!), and most of them are very active on my account, commenting and sending me messages! I've even made friends with some of them, sending each other Christmas gifts, and sometimes hanging out in person! Everyday I get multiple messages from people asking questions about Nancy Drew, or even just wanting to talk about Nancy Drew! This community that we have within the Nancy Drew fandom is so cool! I have connected with so many people through it, and I absolutely love it. I can't wait to continue sharing my love of Nancy Drew with others, and hopefully turning it into a career some day!
